ABOUT THE SHOW

“Sex! Drugs! & Ukuleles!”
The world premiere futuristic romantic musical comedy with Book and Lyrics by Uke Jackson and Music by Terry Waldo, opens at Theater for the New City on Thursday March 13, 2008. 8   o'clock curtain. Directed by Victor Maog and choreographed by emerging dance personality Celia Rowlson-Hall (NY Times, Monday Feb 25, Arts), the show is a sparkling gem of dance and music with a trad jazz flair interspersed with occasional techno beat and bass driven numbers, all expertly woven together into a tapestry of witty, contemporary entertainment for everyone.

Imagine a world, if you can, where the pharmaceutical industry and the music biz have joined forces to replace government. Set at the end of the 21 st Century, the story follows 3 young ukulele players who meet in secret to make music. They are played by Meg Cavanaugh, Lindsay Foreman, and John Forkner. Outside, the post-Great Emergency planet is controlled by the One World Pharmaceutical Corporation. Sex is illegal. Drug evasion is illegal – “Must take your meds.” And making music is illegal, unless one happens to be a member of the corporate Top Ten.

A mysterious stranger, portrayed by Andrew Guilarte, introduces  himself to the uke-swinging trio. Is he mad? Is he magic?   He takes them on a journey that changes all their lives forever, and launches a ukulele revolution that changes the world. (It is a musical comedy, after all.)

Funny, sassy, sexy, delightful, zany, unique, iconoclastic, lyrical, political, tasteful, challenging, or romantic - these adjectives can all be used to describe "Sex! Drugs! & Ukuleles!" This 80 minute nonstop romp thru a wacky future is told with 21 all new songs, with many dance numbers sung by the chorus of four women and two men consisting of Mia Breaux, Tammy Carrasco, Jenna Fakhoury,   Dustin Flores, Kristen Lewis, Guy Lockard. Terry Waldo's experienced hand at music direction is evident in the musical numbers' eagerness to please. Victor Maog shapes these efforts into a sensational entertainment. Maog's and his colleagues' delightful arts are presented in a humble but comfortable Off off Broadway theater with cushioned theater seats. This showcase presentation is clearly destined to go much further and the immense talent of   creative team, and the undiscovered stars that people this charming musical, are the reason why.
